Non-clinical scholarships
The non-clinical scholarships are for academically excellent, scientifically trained candidates to undertake a PhD.
The scholars will conduct an original research project in a world-class research environment, with mentoring and transferable skills training to equip them to apply for personal fellowships for postdoctoral then independent research.
The scholarship comprises three years funding including:
- a tax-free stipend of c. £15,800 p.a (the rate is set by the UKRI-specified minimum stipend)
- University of Edinburgh PhD tuition fees
- A generous allowance for research consumables and travel for conference attendance
Eligibility
There are no restrictions on nationality / residency.
Applicants must:
- have a Masters degree and/or a good (at least 2:1 or equivalent) undergraduate degree in a relevant subject (including, but not necessarily limited to, neuroscience, biomedical sciences, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics).
- Have research experience in a relevant discipline
- be fluent in English, both oral and written
- meet the entry requirements for postgraduate study at the University of Edinburgh.

Please download and complete the application form: EdNeuro.PhD Application Form 2022 and submit it by email to EdNeuro.PhD@ed.ac.uk by 17:00 GMT on Weds 5th January 2022. Please enter "Hugh S P Binnie non-clinical scholarship" as the subject line of your email.
- Leave the boxes marked “Primary Host Centre” and “Supervisor” blank
- Type “Binnie Scholarship” in the box marked “Project/Programme code”
- Leave the boxes marked "Funding eligibility" blank
In the ‘supporting statement’ section of the application form, please indicate what areas of UK DRI research you are most interested in, and indicate which academic supervisor(s) you would prefer to work with. For this scholarship scheme, you are not expected to contact supervisors in advance of making an application. You will be given the opportunity to contact supervisors if you are shortlisted for an interview.
Please note that the University is closed from 24th December to 5th January so we cannot answer queries or acknowledge applications during this window.
