Four Edinburgh neuroscientists elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh

Congratulations to four outstanding Edinburgh Neursocience researchers on being elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh this week.  This prestigious organisation, founded in 1783, is unusual amongst National Academies for its multi-disciplinary approach of appointing leading professionals from within the arts, business and public sector as well as within academia. 

Edinburgh Neuroscience members elected this week are:

Prof Siddharthan Chandran (Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences and Edinburgh Neuroscience Director), whose work links clinical activity with laboratory research into neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease. 

Prof Charles ffrench-Constant (MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine), whose research focuses on myelination and repair, particularly in relation to multiple sclerosis.

Prof Giles Hardingham (Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences and UK Dementia Research Institute at Edinburgh), whose research into the mechanisms of neuronal degeneration and suvival informs our understanding of conditions such as dementia.

Prof Cathie Sudlow (Usher Institute) is the Scientific Advisor to UK Biobank and the new Director of the Centre for Medical informatics at the University of Edinburgh. Her research has been focussed on the genetic causes of stroke.  

These new Fellows will help the RSE to continue its work in providing independent and expert advice to policymakers, support aspiring entrepreneurs, develop research capacity and leadership and engage with the public through engaging events.
