New brain tumour model developed

Monday, 21 November, 2016

Dr Dirk Sieger's laboratory (Centre for Neuroregeneration and Edinburgh Cancer Centre) has developed a new model of glioblastoma, the most common and most aggressive brain tumour, in the zebrafish.  Glioblastoma tumours are highly infiltrated by microglia and this new study highlights the advantages of the zebrafish in understanding the complex interactions between microglia and glioblastoma cells. It is hoped this will improve our understanding of the mechanisms that triggers this tumour formation and identify new drugs that alter microglial activity within the glioblastoma.
