Yifei Yang, Prof. David Price and Dr. Tom Pratt (all Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences, University of Edinburgh) have co-authored a new publication in 'Science' with David Price's former PhD student, Dr. Da Mi, now at Kings College London with Oscar Marin.

Congratulations to four outstanding Edinburgh Neursocience researchers on being elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh this week. This prestigious organisation, founded in 1783, is unusual amongst National Academies for its multi-disciplinary approach of appointing leading professionals from within the arts, business and public sector as well as within academia.

A major fund has been established to support pioneering research into mental health and early death in people with epilepsy. The Juliet Bergqvist Memorial Fund has been made possible by a generous gift from a family affected by epilepsy and suicide. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh are using anonymised health data to link a diagnosis of epilepsy to diagnoses for mental health conditions and causes of death.

Professor Tom GIllingwater and Dr Ewout Groen (both Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences), in collaboration with Professor Kevin Talbot (Oxford), have published a major overview of the recent exciting developments in therapy development for SMA in Nature Reviews Neurology, titled: "Advances in therapy for spinal muscular atrophy: promises and challenges".

Professor Richard Morris (Professor of Neuroscience, Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences, and 2016 Brain Prize Winner) gave a TEDx talk in Madrid at the end of 2017 titled 'The Making and Keeping of Memory'. At this event, he talks from his his vast experience researching the brain and its mechanisms, sharing important insights on how do we build up memories and why we should only worry about forgetting when it affects the most important parts of our life.

Dr Veronique Miron (Centre for Reproductive Health) and colleagues have published a study showing that a specific molecule in the brain is fundamental to repairing the damage caused in Multiple Sclerosis.

Professor Joanna Wardlaw (Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences) and colleagues published an article in Lancet Neurology titled 'Neuroimaging standards for research into small vessel disease and its contribution to ageing and neurodegeneration' in 2013. This paper was foundational in the recently published research from the University of Southern California.

Congratulations to Lucia Ballerini (Research Associate), Professor Joanna Wardlaw (both Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences) and colleagues on the publication of a paper detailing a new method for analysing enlarged perivascular spaces.

Dr Will Whiteley (Stroke Research Group, Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences) has been awarded a prestigious Scottish Senior Clinical Fellowship from the Chief Scientist Office to study the contribution of vascular risk factors to dementia.

Congratulations to Professor Joanna M. Wardlaw (Centre for Clinical Brain Sceinces) who has been awarded the 2018 William M. Feinberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Stroke Lecture Award. The American Stroke Association honoured 10 scientists for their outstanding stroke research at the International Stroke Conference 2018.
